When the warm weather hits and the fact that you're wearing a sundress and sandals proves it, the itch to chop all your hair off begins. But you may want to pump the breaks before jumping on your stylist's calendar, because there's an easier way to freshen up the cut you've got: Try a completely new style instead.
A fresh approach to styling, be it with a sleek braid or a padded headband, is a much less permanent way to switch up your look — and luckily, inspiration is everywhere. We've compiled 5 fresh and trendy summer hairstyles to fall back on when you're feeling that telltale urge to cut, ahead.
Half Up Half Down
An updo for the indecisive, the classic half up-half down is the perfect style for summer because it keeps most of the hair down, with just the topmost layer pulled up and out of your face. "It's a quick and easy way to freshen up your hair," says celebrity stylist Jenny Cho. "It works best if you want to add a style, but don’t want to make it look like you put too much effort into doing your hair."
The Bubble Ponytail
The full, teased ponytail was all the rage this spring, and for summer, we're seeing a variation on the same kind of pony with an added twist down the hair shaft: bubble accents. “I love a ponytail with texture," Cho tells us of the trend. "It's airy and fun. Plus, anyone can do it — you just keep adding subsections down the ponytail."
An Undone Updo
Hollywood's favorite low-key hairstyle — the messy updo — is perfect for every warm-weather occasion you have on your Google calendar. “As the weather gets nicer, you’re probably spending more time outdoors, with little downtime to switch up your hairstyle between occasions," says Francis. His recommendation for a style that can transition from day to night is an updo with a not-too-perfect, wispy finish. "This feels like a romantic summer look that can fit either a dressy or daytime vibe.”
This year, we're considering festival season a lasting summertime vibe, and the hair looks will stay relevant well through August. Here, hairstylist and makeup artist Brittany Sullivan shows how to elevate an ordinary French braid Coachella-style with pastel-pink clip-in color. Don't forget the purposefully playful strands around the ears.
A Statement Headband
We've seen delicate appliques everywhere this past spring, and statement barrettes took over New York Fashion Week last season, so it's no surprise that hair accessories continue to surge in popularity. “Accessories are really making a strong presence this year, and we’ll be seeing a lot more in summer 2019," says celebrity stylist Laura Polko. Currently, headbands are the accoutrements of choice, worn by everyone from Taylor Swift to your most-liked influencer on Instagram.
A braid is one of the easiest ways to make your hair look fancy without trying that hard. “Braids will always make for a classic style, especially during warmer weather," says Francis. Given the rising temps, we're channelling this polished, three-strand braid for every date night until further notice.
